Edu-Dance heads North.
In April of 2007 Edu-Dance ventured north to a wonderful tropical paradise more commonly known as Christmas Island. It is a dot situated in the middle of the Indian Ocean and even though it is still an Australian territory its closest neighbor is Java some 360 kilometers to the north.
Christmas Island District High school is a multicultural school with students from many backgrounds and religions. The population is mostly Chinese followed by Australian/European and Malay. If there needed to be any proof that music and dance cross all universal boundaries then this experience is a perfect example of it.
When we arrived we were greeted by some anxious and reluctant students wondering what on earth we were doing there. Many of the children had never left the island so us arriving with our beat boxes and loud music was somewhat of a shock!!
After some reluctant and nervous starters everyone involved embraced the program with an amazing amount of enthusiasm and vigor. The smiling faces and looks of excitement said it all!! The outcome was magnificent with the final performance attended by almost every resident on the Island.
Our experience on the Island was one we will never forget and we thank all the staff and children from Christmas Island District High for the wonderful time we had there.
